According to an announcement made on Monday 8th, Aker ASA is establishing a new company named Seetee AS, which will be exclusively focused on investing in bitcoin companies and projects.
Aker ASA was established in 2004 and is headquartered in Oslo, Norway. The company, directed by billionaire Kjell Inge Roekke, is focused on offshore fishing, engineering, and construction.
Roekke declared that Seetee AS will have a starting capital of 500 million Norwegian crowns (almost $59million), and its liquid assets will be in bitcoin.
In collaboration with Blockstream, a blockchain technology company headquartered in Montreal, Canada, Seetee will concentrate on bitcoin mining. The new company will also try to integrate the blockchain technology benefits in Aker’s operations.
“First, we will use bitcoin as our treasury asset and join the community,” Roekke said. “In bitcoin speak, we will be holders. We will be different, but additive. Perhaps not as rebellious as the cypherpunks who invented bitcoin. But much more progressive than most established corporates,” he added.
Roekke, the second richest man in Norway, is another billionaire joining the list of those that believe in a growing financial future of bitcoin and other digital currencies. The only concern that remains according to many analysts is their volatile nature, making cryptocurrencies difficult to use in everyday life.
“Bitcoin may still go to zero. But it can also become the core of a new monetary architecture,” Roekke, chairman of Aker ASA declared. “People who know the most about bitcoin believe its future success is nearly inevitable,” he added.
